Most national and provincial government departments advertise posts in the Public Service Vacancy Circular published by the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA), and on their own websites. Applications follow a standard process, and small mistakes, such as a missing signature or reference number, are a common reason applications are not considered.

What is the Z83?

The Z83 is the official application for employment form used across the public service. Departments require the current version of the form, which is available from the DPSA website and most department websites. Using an outdated version can lead to your application being disqualified, so download it fresh for each application.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole advert. Note the post title, reference number, centre (location), requirements, closing date, and exactly how to apply (email, online portal, post or hand delivery).
  2. Complete every section of the Z83 that applies to you, including the reference number and post title. Write “N/A” rather than leaving a question blank.
  3. Sign and date the form. Unsigned forms are a frequent reason for rejection.
  4. Attach a detailed CV covering your qualifications, experience with dates, and references.
  5. Check what documents the advert asks for. Many departments now ask for only the Z83 and CV at application stage, with certified copies of qualifications and ID requested only from shortlisted candidates. Follow the advert: requirements differ between departments.
  6. Apply one post per form. If you apply for several posts, submit a separate Z83 for each reference number.
  7. Submit before the closing date and time. Late applications are not considered.

Common mistakes

  • Missing or wrong reference number.
  • Unsigned Z83, or an old version of the form.
  • Applying by a method the advert didn't ask for (e.g. emailing when it says to use a portal).
  • Not meeting a stated minimum requirement, such as a specific qualification or driver's licence.
  • Sending one combined application for several posts.

After you apply

Many adverts state that if you have not heard back within a set period (often three months), you should consider your application unsuccessful. Shortlisted candidates are usually invited to an interview and may be asked to complete competency assessments and security vetting.

Stay safe

Government departments never charge a fee to apply, and they don't recruit through WhatsApp groups or “agents” who promise posts for payment. Apply only through the department contact details in the official advert, and report anyone who asks for money to the department concerned.
