Job Summary
About the roleTo support the efficient, ethical, and sustainable daily operations of the piggery while undergoing a structured development program. This role is designed to transform academic knowledge into practical leadership skills, preparing you for a future management role within the Company's mission-driven framework.
Responsibilities
Daily Operations & Animal Welfare Support (60%)
* Assist in overseeing daily feeding, watering, and health checks of all stock (sows, piglets, weaners,finishers).
* Learn and enforce strict biosecurity protocols and animal welfare standards.
* Monitor livestock behaviour and environment, reporting any signs of distress, illness, or irregularities immediately.
* Assist with data recording for tracking feed conversion, growth rates, and health metrics.
Production & Process Management (25%)
* Work with the Production Manager on farrowing schedules and weaning processes.
* Learn and help implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all production stages.
* Assist in inventory management of feed, bedding, and veterinary supplies.
* Participate in waste management and composting operations, supporting the farm’s sustainability goals.
Team & Project Support (15%)
* Under supervision, help coordinate daily tasks for small teams of animal technicians.
* Lead a defined, small-scale continuous improvement project (e.g., optimizing a feeding routine, improving record-keeping digitization).
* Participate in safety meetings and contribute to maintaining a zero-incident safety culture.
* Act as a liaison for data collection and reporting for the management team.
Training & Development Components (Structured Program)
* Months 1-3: Immersion in all production areas (breeding, farrowing, nursery, finishing) with assigned mentors.
* Months 4-9: Rotational focus on key areas: nutrition, veterinary health plans, and waste management systems.
Minimum Requirements
* South African Unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 34.
* Must not have participated on the YES programme before.
* Matric.
* Diploma in Animal Productions.
* Strong work ethic, physical stamina, and comfort working in an outdoor farm environment.
* Eagerness to learn, take direction, and ask questions.
* Foundational understanding of animal welfare and a genuine respect for livestock.
